Gleptosil® is a presentation of gleptoferron, a macro molecular complex containing iron in a readily utilizable form for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in piglets. The solution contains phenol as a preservative.

Gleptosil® is not an approved drug product in the U.S. Gleptosil® is currently authorized for sale in Canada. Due to a potential animal drug shortage, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is temporarily permitting marketing of Gleptosil® in the U.S. for prevention or treatment of anemia in baby pigs.

INDICATIONS

Gleptosil® (Iron 200 mg/mL Solution for Injection) is a haematinic for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in piglets. Piglets born and reared under intensive conditions may be deficient in iron and rapidly become anaemic. Unless these piglets receive supplemental iron early in life they are prone to suffer decreased vitality, poorer growth rates and increased susceptibility to disease.

Gleptosil® (solution pour Injection de fer 200 mg/mL) est un hématinique pour la prévention et le traitement de l’anémie par carence en fer chez les porcelets. Les porcelets nouveauxnés, qui vivent sous des conditions intensives peuvent souffrir de la carence en fer et peuvent devenir rapidement anémiques. À moins que les porcelets reçoivent du fer supplémentaire tôt dans la vie ils sont susceptibles de souffrir des effets d’une vitalité diminuée, d’avoir un taux de croissance plus faible, et de présenter une susceptibilité accrue à la maladie.

DOSAGE

For the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anaemia: a single dose of 1 mL (200 mg iron) injected within the first three days of life. Clinical anaemia may normally develop within the first two weeks of life in unsupplemented piglets. In such cases of diagnosed iron deficiency anaemia the dosage is 1 mL (200 mg iron).

ADMINISTRATION

Gleptosil® is recommended for administration by intramuscular injection deep into the hind limb. The site of injection should be clean, ideally swabbed with cotton soaked in alcohol. Excess alcohol should be removed before injecting. Use only automatic syringe equipment. The syringe and needles should be sterilised by boiling before use and the rubber seal of the vial should be swabbed with cotton soaked in alcohol. Injection site (diagram 1): On the hind limb mid-way between the stifle joint and the base of the tail. Injection technique (diagrams 2 and 3): Pull the skin and the underlying tissue aside with thumb. Insert the needle at right angles to the skin and slowly inject the 1 mL dose. Pause after injecting the dose and release the skin before withdrawing the needle. Recommended needle size: 5/8” No. 20 g. Wipe the needle with cotton and alcohol before injecting the next piglet.

POSOLOGIE

Pour la prévention et traitement de l’anémie par carence en fer : une dose unique de 1 mL (200 mg de fer) injectée au cours d’un des trois premiers jours de la vie. L’anémie clinique peut se manifester dans les deux premières semaines chez les porcelets qui n’ont pas de fer en quantité suffisante. Lorsque l’on diagnostique l’anémie par carence en fer, le dosage nécessaire pour traiter est une dose unique de 1 mL (200 mg de fer).

ADMINISTRATION

On recommande que le Gleptosil® soit administré par injection intramusculaire profonde dans la jambe arrière. Le site d’injection doit être propre, essuyé avec du coton hydrophile baigné d’alcool. Enlever l’alcool excessif avant d’injecter le Gleptosil®. N’utiliser qu’avec une seringue automatique seulement. La seringue et les aiguilles doivent être stérilisées en les faisant bouillir avant l’utilisation et le scellé en caoutchouc du flacon doit être essuyé avec du coton hydrophile baigné d’alcool. Le site d’injection (Diagramme 1) se trouve sur la jambe à mi-chemin entre l’articulation du genou et la base de la queue. Technique d’injection (Diagrammes 2 et 3) : Tirez la peau et les tissus sousjacents vers le genou en se servant du pouce. Insérer l’aiguille dans la peau à angle droit et injecter lentement la dose de 1 mL. Attendre quelques instants après l’injection et laisser aller la peau avant de retirer l’aiguille. La taille de l’aiguille recommandée est : 5/8” No. 20 g. Essuyer l’aiguille avec du coton hydrophile et de l’alcool avant d’injecter un autre porcelet.

CAUTIONS

In piglets intended for early slaughter, it should be noted that use of an intra-muscular injection of iron is likely to result in temporary staining of the muscle. Iron staining decreases rapidly from the time of injection with none being observed by six weeks. Very rarely, the administration of parenteral iron dextran formulations has been associated with hypersensitivity reactions.

PRÉCAUTIONS

Chez les porcelets destinés à un abattage précoce il est à noter qu’une injection de fer intramusculaire produira une coloration temporaire du muscle. La coloration du muscle diminue rapidement et devrait disparaître au bout de six semaines après l’injection. L’administration de formulations parentérales à base de fer dextran a été associée, dans de très rares cas, à des réactions d’hypersensibilité.

STORAGE: DO NOT STORE ABOVE 25°C. PROTECT FROM FREEZING. USE WITHIN 28 DAYS AFTER RECONSTITUTION/OPENING THE VIAL.

ENTREPOSAGE: NE PAS ENTREPOSER À PLUS DE 25 °C. PROTÉGER DU GEL. UTILISER DANS LES 28 JOURS APRÈS LA RECONSTITUTION/UNE FOIS QUE LA FIOLE EST OUVERTE.
